Is Groupon Good for Business?

Marketoonist Groupon

With the approach of the Groupon IPO, there is no shortage of articles being published about how Groupon and other daily deal sites are bad for the small businesses that use them.

As illustrated in the cartoon above, many businesses are in awe of the promise of a flood of new customers coming in the door once their daily deal is posted.  And it really is very exciting.

As an online marketing consultant, I always advise my clients to have a plan to handle those customers and how to create more sales from those customers.  Because whatever you may hear or read, a daily deal is not going to be as successful or as easy as you'd like if you don't have a plan.

If your business is considering a daily deal site, do some research on how to best implement it.

Here are a few articles to jumpstart your research:

For a shot at success with a daily deal, you'll need to:

  • Research other business' experiences with daily deals
  • Have a plan in place to handle the influx of customers
  • Have some sort of analytics in place so you can actually measure whether the campaign was a success.

Have you offered a daily deal for your business?  Was it successful in your eyes?
